From the SUR

From the SUR is a multidisciplinary project led by a team of artists who will lead Afro-Latin American music and dance workshops, focused on exploring and expanding elements of the cultural heritage from South America by creating a piece of music and dance together.

Pianodrome CIC worked in partnership with Jose Rojas to secure funding for From the SUR from the Diversity and Inclusion Fund.

Have you ever thought about building your own instrument and then learning how to play it? Perhaps you have thought about discovering your body through new dance techniques?

Do you want to learn more about Latin American culture, talk about music, dance, explore your experience with racism/discrimination and different cultures/heritage?

Do you want to be part of a colourful crew playing or dancing in a safe, respectful and diverse environment?

If your answer is YES to one of these questions then From the SUR is for you!

From the SUR workshops are free of charge and aimed towards 13 to 30 year olds.

From the SUR workshops

Cajones in the neighborhood - led by Jose Rojas

In the 9 sessions of craft & music workshops we will build percussion instruments and learn some traditional and modern rhythm patterns from Afro-Latin American Heritage.

Both workshops include street art to paint the instruments and creating of some costumes with the street painter Lukasz Wierzbicki . The finale of the project will be to produce an amazing performance at the Grand Pianodrome.

Dancing Sur - led by Andrea Torres

These 9 sessions will give you a creative journey through elements of Afro-Latin American dances to develop a site-specific performance, creating an encounter between the sculptural location and physical space of the Pianodrome, while learning dance movement and approaches from the Sur [South].

Both workshops include street art to paint the instruments and creating of some costumes with the street painter Lukasz Wierzbicki . The finale of the project will be to produce an amazing performance at the Grand Pianodrome.

We will examine how traditional elements of Afro-Latin American music and dance can be presented in a setting like the Pianodrome. Crafting the instrument (cajon) while unfolding a dialogue between the space’s architecture, key aspects of the dances, and street art. The goal is to upcycle traditional elements of this cultural heritage, and to explore and expand new ways of approaching the music and dance from the Sur [South].
