The James Brady/Ed Rice duo brings together two friends and long-term collaborators, united by shared interests in open, breathing jazz and Brazilian music.

Trumpeter and composer James Brady recently relocated to Scotland and has already made an impact on the Scottish music scene, appearing with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Scottish National Concert Orchestra and Balkan band Smash Kafana, amongst others. In 2022 he embarked on a Creative Scotland-supported research and artistic development project into New Orleans traditional jazz music, including a visit to the US and collaborations with Scottish early jazz bands Auld Town Stompers and Tenement Jazz Band. James has performed at leading UK and international venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican, Usher Hall, Sage Gateshead, jazz venues including the Vortex, Pizza Express Live, Edinburgh Jazz Bar and Casa del Jazz Rome, and festivals including the London, Cheltenham, Montreux, Nanjing and Cambridge Jazz Festivals. Artistic collaborations have included performances with Yazz Ahmed, Liane Carroll, Laura Mvula and Joe Locke, and ongoing projects with John Garner, Alex Hitchcock and the Wilderness Orchestra.

Pianist Ed Rice has worked with Norma Winstone, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Swingle Singers and performed across London at the Pizza Express Live venues, the Jazz Café, Ronnie Scott’s, the Vortex Jazz Bar and Kansas Smitty’s, having also appeared at jazz festivals in Cheltenham and Montreux, Switzerland. A keen educator and vocal accompanist, he has been the pianist for workshops with many of the UK’s finest jazz vocalists, including Lee Gibson, Tina May, Claire Martin, Anita Wardell, Jacqui Dankworth and Sara Colman. Recording projects Ed has recently been involved with include leading the rhythm section for a new album with the Guildhall Jazz Singers, featuring arrangements by New York Voices and original songs by celebrated Scottish saxophonist Duncan Lamont. Ed also played piano and keyboards on Chris Read’s 2016 debut album If I Knew, as well as engineering and mixing parts of the album. Ed is active in Brazilian music as a researcher and performer, with a particular interest in performing Bossa Nova repertoire on the piano. Since 2019 he has been working on a practice-based PhD focusing on interpreting the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim from a jazz perspective.
