Inside a string instrument is space. The shape of this space and the resonance of its thin and curved wooden walls are what give a string instrument is unique sound. Playing a string instrument is essentially an exploration of how the sounds produced by this internal acoustic resonate with fellow players and with the room.
All four movements of Brahm's wonderful second string sextet begin with a different exploration of the resonant properties of six string players playing together. We are really excited to make these explorations with you live in the Pianodrome where hundreds of resonant strings in pianos embedded in the seating structure will sing along.
To my mind the second themes of all four movements of this piece are linked by an overwhelming feeling of joy in the sharing of great tunes. It is a great honour to have this opportunity to play this final concert in our free lunchtime concert series. Thank you to Witherby Foundation for sponsoring this series and to all who have played and ‘resonated’ with us throughout this fabulous summer.
