Guinbre’ three-string-bass player and lead vocalist Omar Afif has been developing Gnawa Sufi music and culture in the UK since 2008. His music combines Gnawa with Afro-funk and blues in a meeting of healing and trance celebration.
The large inherited repertoire of Gnawa music is a strong base for developing multiple fusions and brings melodies and rhythms based on different scales and time signatures to common Western music. Omar brings his creative practice of the genre to combine with various modern and traditional instruments.
Omar has collaborated on a range of projects with musicians in the UK and has led the Gnawa Trance Fusion Band which combines traditional and modern instruments. In this musical performance he will be accompanied by percussionist Mohamed El Khanfoufi.
